Your Home’s Right Temperature for Your Baby
Your baby needs proper care. In order to provide the best care possible for your child, you need a safe home environment. You may already have the latest baby monitors on the market, a sturdy crib, and baby proofed cupboards, but there’s something you might be forgetting – the temperature.
With a baby in your home, it is important that the temperature is never too hot or too cold. Either one could result in a sick or uncomfortable child. Improper temperature control may actually put your child at risk for a number of serious health issues. In fact, babies have an increased risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) if they are overheated. On the other hand, if a baby is too cold, they will likely have difficulty sleeping and will often be fussy or restless. Due to the serious consequences, it is essential that your home is always at the right temperature.
So, what is the right temperature for your baby? Well, it depends on the time of year. Most doctors agree that the right temperature for your baby is between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit when your furnace is running during the winter months. The ideal home temperature ranges from 75 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit during those warm summer months when the air conditioner is turned on. You may want to keep your baby’s bedroom slightly warmer during the day and slightly cooler at night. This will increase the comfort of your child and help them to sleep better.
To ensure that your baby is comfortable, always be aware. Know the temperature of your home and be conscious of any sudden changes. If you have a central heating or cooling unit (also known as an HVAC unit), the easiest way to keep track of the temperature is with the thermostat. Make sure that you are always keeping an eye on it to make sure that your baby stays at the right temperature. Their tiny bodies are incredibly sensitive to both hot and cold, so don’t neglect the thermostat in your home. If you have a thermostat in the baby’s room, be sure to set it to an appropriate temperature.
The well being and comfort of your baby is essential. Unfortunately, it can be far more difficult to effectively regulate the temperature of your home without proper heating and cooling installation. It is not the best idea to rely on fans, open windows, and portable heaters to keep your baby – and your home – at the right temperature. If you are concerned about the heating and cooling system that you currently have in your home, Heating Ontario’s experienced contractors can help determine the best system for your needs.
Another way to make sure that your baby is at the right temperature is to dress them appropriately. The general rule of thumb is to dress your baby in one layer more than what you are wearing yourself. For example, if you are wearing a short sleeved t-shirt that day, then put your baby in a long sleeved shirt instead. Be sure to check your baby whenever possible to make sure that they do not feel overly hot or cold.
Every parent worries about meeting their baby’s needs. By focusing on achieving the right temperature for your baby, you can ensure that your home offers a safe and nurturing environment.
